Fall
Fall is the most beautiful season in Montana and late September, October
and early November offer many fine flyfishing opportunities. With the
riverside cottonwoods, the aspen, and larch (and even the brown trout)
all turning yellow, and snow dusting the high country, it can be hard
to keep your eyes on the fly. These cooler months offer a fantastic opportunity
to tackle some of Montana's big brown trout on streamers as well as catch
the last of the year's dry fly fishing with the large October caddis or
blue wing olive hatches. Fewer fishermen visit Montana this time of year,
so the relative solitude on the rivers is an added bonus.
|
| We recommend virtually all of our
rivers this time of year and regularly wish fall were six months long. We
often find ourselves throwing big streamers on the Yellowstone or Madison
for the brown trout as they get a little bit cranky. You might need a helmet
but the results can be extremely exciting. The Clark Fork has excellent
dryfly fishing for it's rainbow and cutthroat trout late into the year with
a variety of lesser known mayfly hatches. The October caddis provide a nice
juicy meal that the trout in the Blackfoot River usually can't pass up.
Try the Yellowstone, Madison, Gallatin, Clark Fork, Blackfoot, Bitterroot,
Missouri, Ruby or any other Montana waters you long to fish. |
