Gallatin River

The Gallatin River is where they actually filmed the flyfishing scenes in the movie "A River Runs Through It". The Gallatin is picture perfect and fits many peoples idea of what a Montana trout stream should look like. This medium sized river offers great wade fishing and is chock-full of medium sized rainbows and a few nice browns. The spunky rainbows in this classic western river have a lightening-fast strike that must be missed- a number of times- to be believed.

A trip the length of the Gallatin would begin in Yellowstone Park on a small mountain and meadow stream. It would then pass through "the Canyon" where a road parallels the river and offers great access to many enticing pools, riffles, and whitewater stretches. After leaving the canyon access gets more difficult as the river hits the Gallatin Valley and passes through cottonwood bottoms and a number of braided stretches, where the numerous side channels produce some very enjoyable fishing for the stealthy wader. Only the last few miles of the Gallatin before it joins the Madison and Jefferson to form the Missouri river are open to fishing from boats. This stretch can produce some very good fishing before and after the irrigation season.
