| Montana's Smith River really is
one of the treasures of Big Sky Country. Superlatives can be abused in attempts
to describe the experience. A 4-6 day float through some of the most beautiful
scenery imaginable. Giant cliffs hover over the river in many canyon stretches.
Spectacular campsites. Superb flyfishing for brown, rainbow, cutthroat,
and brook trout. A perfect flyfishing vacation. |

The Smith is a small river, and its
floating season is usually limited to the higher water months. As the river
drops with summer heat and irrigation demands it eventually becomes impassable.
Given the relatively short floating season and the large number of people
wanting to experience the Smith, crowding eventually became a problem. Access
on the Smith is now carefully managed and permitted, with a limit on the
number and size of both commercial (guided) and private trips. Because of
the permitting system I work these trips through my friend and fellow outfitter
Mike Hillygus. Launch dates are limited so plan early. |
